What happens when a Happy House child turns 18?
By law, our young people must leave residential children’s care when they reach adulthood. But turning 18 doesn’t mean they are suddenly ready to face the world alone.
Some of our young people are still completing secondary school. Others want to continue to college, learn a trade or pursue further training. They have ambitions, plans and dreams for their future, and we want to give them the best possible start.
That’s why, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have built three Half-Way Houses close to Happy House.
Each bungalow can be home to up to four young adults, providing a stepping stone between growing up at Happy House and living completely independently.
Here, our young people take greater responsibility for everyday life - cooking, budgeting, managing a home and learning the practical skills that come with independence, while continuing their education and having the Happy House family close by for guidance and support.
Because turning 18 might mean leaving the children’s home, but it never means leaving the family.
Our aim isn’t simply to support our children through childhood. It’s to help them become confident, capable young adults, equipped with the education and skills to build independent futures of their own.
Once a Happy House Kid, always a Happy House Kid.
