Here is the news from Happy House, relayed by our own Papa Dave.
And he’s happy to report that things are a lot rosier now than they were last year when we were dealt a huge blow when our bank decided to close our accounts.
Inevitably, moving from one bank to another meant that we did lose quite a big number of child sponsors and regular donors.
Some we were unable to contact because they had not sent updated details and others for varying reasons.
We are grateful to everyone who has supported us over many, many years and are delighted that our numbers are now on the way up again.
Also, Papa tells us the big banda is being rethatched. Last year, we could only afford to have half of it done, so the second half, now started, will complete the job.
Papa also has good news from one of the young people who, along with his sister, was educated at SDA School in Watamu – the first project Mama Sue and Papa Dave started to develop from 2000 until 2007, when it had been redeveloped, expanded, equipped and was ready to stand on its own feet.
Papa bumped into the former student, now in the Kenya Navy, who told him how he is progressing through the ranks, with the next promotion being to major.
His sister, he told Papa, went on to graduate with honours from Mombasa University – the only female at the time to be studying civil engineering.
These young people, kids from one of the most deprived areas, would not have had any education without the sponsorship scheme Mama set up.
At Happy House, Mama’s first stand-alone project, we have also had success stories, and John Bahati, who was such a withdrawn little boy when he came to us back in 2010, is just coming to the end of his first very successful year at Nairobi University.
Now Papa and the team are hoping to bring together our former kids for a reunion party later in the year, so the planning is yet to start!
