This World Environment Day, we’re proud to shine a light on our incredible Waste Warriors – the young changemakers of Happy House who are taking real steps to protect the planet.
Through the My Little Zen Programme, our children have spent the past month separating, weighing, and documenting their daily waste. Guided by care, curiosity, and community, they’ve learned how to sort their rubbish into categories like paper, plastic, glass, organic and non-recyclables and monitor how much waste they were using on a daily basis.
As part of the programme, the children were introduced to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a special focus on:
· SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and
· SDG 13: Climate Action.
They’ve discovered how their everyday choices connect to global challenges – and how simple actions, like reusing and reducing waste, can help build a healthier, fairer planet for all.
Throughout this journey, the children also reflected on what they do well like reusing materials and separating food waste and identified where they could do more to reduce. These honest conversations helped them see that every small step counts and every effort is worth celebrating.
This journey has helped the children develop vital life skills — from responsibility and observation to teamwork and reflection. More importantly, it’s shown them that they are not too small to make a difference. And to bring their message to life, the children wrote their own script and recorded the video shared in this blog to raise awareness about waste – developing even more powerful skills along the way such as: planning and organisation; creative expression and storytelling and communication and collaboration.
With My Little Zen’s guidance, the programme has sparked a powerful shift: children are now asking thoughtful questions, changing habits, and inspiring others to care too.
And this is just the beginning. With every diary entry and every item sorted, they are planting seeds of change for their home, their community and the world around them.
