We’re always looking for ways to protect the planet and teach our children the importance of caring for the environment.
Changing habits isn’t always easy, but with the help of our five Waste Warriors here at the Happy House, small changes are already leading to big results.
This week’s Waste Warrior lesson focused on Reuse, one of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and it really got the children thinking: What can we reuse in new and creative ways?
Inspired by the discussion, our warriors took their mission beyond the Happy House and into the community. Alongside their brothers and sisters, they headed to the beach to collect ghost nets.
These old, discarded fishing nets often wash up along the shores of Watamu. Known as ghost gear, they pose a major threat to marine ecosystems continuing to trap and kill marine life long after being abandoned.
Globally, it’s estimated that 640,000 tonnes of ghost gear enter the ocean every year.
Our young warriors decided they wanted to get out a collect what net they could find and then, inspired by their recent creative workshop, for all the children to find ways of using the debris to make beautiful things. And that’s just what they did!
