In Kenya, families naturally support one another.
Children grow up helping their parents and grandparents—it’s simply part of daily life.
It’s no different at Happy House. At weekends, all our children take on tasks around the house or grounds to support the house aunties and uncles who do so much for them.
The process is completely democratic: our Kids Council—children chosen by their peers—decides who will do what and issues the weekend rota.
It’s a system that has worked beautifully for almost 16 years.
The rota provides variety, with jobs ranging from laundry to gardening, ensuring no one gets bored and everyone has the chance to build a well-rounded base of life skills.
This Saturday, Michael and Ludwin were out in the grounds, clearing any litter or natural debris and making sure everywhere was spick and span, as charity trustee Phil Marshall tells us.
