A honeymoon in Watamu last November was James and Sabrina’s Derlacki’s first introduction to Kenya — and they fell instantly in love with the country and its people.
When they returned to the UK, their hearts were still very much here, and they decided they wanted to give something back to the community that had made them feel so at home.
Their search led them to Children of Watamu’s Happy House. After getting in touch and learning about our volunteering programme, they made the wonderful decision to return for five weeks to work with our family, both at home and in school.
On Saturday, they joined in with our weekly Kids Club, where they introduced themselves to our children and were given the warmest of Happy House welcomes. Volunteers like James and Sabrina bring so much to our Happy House family.
They arrive with open hearts, willing hands, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Their presence enriches the children’s lives in countless ways — from sharing new skills and experiences, to offering friendship, encouragement, and simply being there to listen. In return, they gain a deep understanding of the lives of our young people, the work we do, and the powerful sense of community that holds our family together.
Every volunteer becomes part of our story. Their energy helps keep our programmes vibrant, their fresh ideas help us grow, and their compassion strengthens the supportive, loving environment our children deserve.
We are delighted to welcome James and Sabrina into that story, and we look forward to seeing the contributions they will make during their time with us.
