Chef Erick in the kitchen

This weekend, the Happy House kitchen was full of energy—and much of it came from Erick.

He’s growing up fast, and like all our young people, he’s learning that being part of a home means lending a hand.

Chores aren’t just tasks to tick off; they’re lessons in responsibility, teamwork, and pride. Erick worked alongside our cook to prepare one of our most loved traditional meals: rice and beans.

It may be simple, but to our youngsters it’s comfort—warm, familiar, and shared. What made the experience even more special was using our new stainless steel jiko. Donated so generously by friends in Italy, it has already become a favourite in the kitchen and is in use every day.

Erick was fascinated by how efficiently it works, especially how little fuel it uses. For a young man who pays attention to the details, this made a big impression.

Erick’s time in the kitchen shows we don’t just feed our children; we teach them skills that will carry them confidently into their futures. Cooking is one of those skills—something practical, essential, and even joyful when shared.
