Gardener Tevin has a reason to smile

Watamu is experiencing high temperatures and very little rain at the moment, making this a difficult season for growing vegetables.

The soil feels drier by the day, and many of the crops that usually thrive here are struggling.

But in the middle of these challenging conditions, our Happy House gardener Tevin has found a reason to be optimistic.

He’s introducing a crop that is completely new to us: mchicha, a highly nutritious leafy green that’s popular throughout Kenya.

Often served stewed and accompanied by ugali, mchicha is not only delicious but packed with vitamins and minerals—exactly the kind of vegetable that brings real value to our meals and to the health of the children.

In the shade of our greenhouses, sheltered from the worst of the heat, mchicha has a chance to flourish.

It’s a clever choice: mchicha is known for being hardy, fast-growing, and adaptable, and Tevin believes it may be just the right plant for the conditions we are now facing.
