Turning trash to treasure – sustainably!

The holiday season at Happy House has brought something truly special

We’ve been fortunate to welcome Connor, a passionate teacher from Blackpool, who has been volunteering his time each week—virtually—to lead our children through inspiring lessons on sustainability and recycling.

Using a project-based learning approach, Connor, together with our dedicated Happy House teachers, guided the children in transforming everyday “rubbish” into remarkable creations.

What started as discarded bottle tops, cartons, old wool, and packaging quickly became vibrant works of art. Our children showed incredible imagination and teamwork as they designed and built: A colourful mosaic artwork made entirely from bottle tops; A musical wind chime crafted from bottle tops; Personalised key rings from leftover wool; A detailed model of a milk factory: A flower vase from reclaimed cardboard; A sturdy pencil holder from used cartons; A practical fruit collector made from old milk bottles; A beautiful art piece using golden offcuts and textured scraps.

Each creation tells a story—not just of creativity, but of the importance of caring for our planet and seeing value where others might see waste.

At the start of the project, Connor had planned to choose a winner. But faced with such an incredible selection of imaginative work, he admitted defeat!

Instead, he decided to find something special for everyone—a true testament to how outstanding each child’s effort was.

We’re thrilled to share that we are now in touch with a local recycling partner in Watamu who is interested in displaying some of the children’s work in their office. What a wonderful way for our young people to inspire others in the community!

A huge thank you to Connor, and to our fantastic Happy House teachers, and to our IT wizard and trustee, Lewismfor making these sessions possible and helping our children see the world through a greener, more imaginative lens.
