Reading with Florence

After the school day is finished, there is still plenty of learning happening at the Happy House.

Florence has been spending some time with our younger children, helping them develop their reading skills and, importantly, encouraging them to enjoy picking up a book.

Little Betty was busy reading a book all about helicopters, working through the words with Florence by her side to encourage and help her along the way.

Florence has been putting into practice some of the reading and motivational strategies she learnt from our friend Fran from Energy Coast UTC in the UK during her visit to the Happy House earlier this year.

It is wonderful to see those ideas continuing to be used and shared with our children long after the visit itself. The children are also making good use of the class readers kindly donated by our friend Rosin last year, giving them a lovely selection of books to practise with and enjoy.

These quiet moments after school might seem small, but helping our younger children become confident readers can make such a difference to their learning.

It is another lovely example of how the time, skills and resources shared by our friends and supporters continue to have an impact at the Happy House. Well done to Betty for her reading and to Florence for helping our little ones discover just how much fun a good book can be.
