Congratulations to Baraka, who has been crowned this month’s winner of our Squirrel Financial Literacy Challenge at the Happy House.
Our Squirrel programme helps the children learn about managing money through a fun and practical activity. Each week, they receive a virtual salary and have to make decisions about how to use it, including paying bills, managing unexpected expenses and deciding how much they can afford to save.
Just like in real life, there are choices to make along the way. Spending too much can leave you short when an unexpected expense comes along, while careful budgeting and saving can help you prepare for the future.
The monthly challenge gives our children an opportunity to put these lessons into practice, with a little friendly competition encouraging everyone to think carefully about their financial decisions.
This month, Baraka came out on top, showing that he is developing a good understanding of how to manage his money.
Financial literacy is an important life skill, particularly as our older children begin preparing for greater independence. Through activities like Squirrel, we hope to give them the confidence and knowledge to make sensible financial decisions when they eventually manage their own money.
Well done to Baraka on his achievement, and we look forward to seeing who takes the top spot next month.
