Taking first steps to career path

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been very fortunate to work with Serena, from Italy, who has been spending time in online sessions with our young people, helping them think seriously about their futures.

For those who are finishing school this year, this is a really important time. We want every young person to have a clear idea of what they would like to do next, whether that is vocational training, college, university, an apprenticeship or another route into employment.

It’s not about telling them what career they should choose. It’s about helping them understand their strengths, discover the opportunities available to them and start making realistic plans for the future they want.

Serena, a biomedical researcher, said the experience of becoming a mother shaped her outllook and naturally led her to coaching.

When she found out about us from reachvolunteering.org.uk she wanted to support our young people in careers coaching.

Serena has been wonderful in the way she has worked individually with our young people, listening to their ideas, asking them questions and helping them think about choices they may not have considered before.

And for us at Happy House, once we understand what each young person wants to achieve, we can start looking at what we need to do to make that possible.

We also don’t want these conversations to begin only when somebody is about to leave school. During the next long school break, we’re hoping to start this work with some of our younger children too, so that they have more time to explore different careers, develop their interests and begin thinking about their futures.

Here our social worker, Auntie Elina, is updating Serena on how the kids are progressing,
