Four of our Happy House children are flying high having been given the opportunity to take part in a kite surfing scholarship programme
in Watamu.
It was thanks to The Wind Family , a non-profit initiative that creates opportunities for local youth through kite surfing.
Rather than offering just a one-off experience or taster session, the programme provides structured training equivalent to IKO Level 1 and 2, helping young people develop real skills, confidence and progression within the sport.
Before being selected, Esther, Steve, Edward and Samira first had to complete a selection process on the beach, where they were assessed on important qualities such as teamwork, concentration, listening skills and determination.
We are so proud to share that the four of them were successfully selected and have now officially started their training.
Each weekend, the children spend time on the beach learning the foundations of kite surfing step by step. From understanding wind direction and safety to controlling the kite and building confidence in the water, they are already learning valuable new skills while also enjoying the experience immensely.
For many local children, opportunities like this would normally be completely out of reach, which is why programmes such as this can have such a lasting impact.
The Wind Family works closely with local kite schools to help create opportunities for young people within the Watamu community, and we feel incredibly grateful that our children have been included in this initiative.
We cannot wait to watch their confidence and skills continue to grow over the coming months.
