Sunshine in the rainy season has been a blessing this year because it is giving us a chance to replace the roof on one of outbuildings at Happy House.
The building, aptly described by Children of Watamu charity trustee, Lewis Hall, as a social hub is key to the life of our family.
It houses a room for our social worker, Auntie Elina, where she can meet and mentor children in private; a sewing room for our seamstress, Auntie Eunice, who makes school uniform and makes and mends any textiles used in our home. And the largest room is a family room, where our children do their yoga classes, and where they have access to laptops to do their homework or relax.
The makuti thatched roof, which has been repaired as needed, has been on for 16 years and now well past any more patching up so the trustees made the decision to use money from reserves to replace it with a metal roof as we did with the main house two years ago.
Obviously, reserves are precious and the money brought in from fundriasing has never recovered to pre-Covid levels, this will leave us with much less than we’d like.
If any of our friends could help by fundraising or by making a donation we would be hugely grateful.
Not only would you be raising money but you would also be helping to spread the word about the work we are doing to raise children who come into our care from situations of extreme poverty, tragedy, neglect or despair, in a happy, loving family home, with education and opportunity.
